Abstract

|
While abdominal pregnancy is extremely rare, obstetrically it is one of the most dan gerous conditions. The frequency is about 1 in 3500 pregnancies although various auth-ors disagree. There are various causative factors.
Abdominal pregnancies are .classified-as either primary or secondary. Secondary abnormal pregnancies occur more frequently. The rupture of a uterine tubal pregnancy and abortion are the most frequent causes of secondary abdominal pregnancies.
In the past, the maternal mortality rate has been as high as 14%. This was due to the fact that antibiotic treatment, blood, transfusion and surgical procedures were not well developed. However, today this has been reduced to about 2%. Fetal mortality is -almost 100%. Usually the fetus is dead or dies soon after delivery. More than half have -congenital abnormalities.
In addition the diagnosis is very difficult. Many times the diagnosis is made during surgery. However, even with a pre-operative diagnosis, the physician- must be very careful in the judgement of the duration of pregnancy, fetus viability, and post-operative care. This report includes, one case of secondary abdominal pregnancy which had a duration of 40 weeks with the birth of a normal female baby.
